Safety at Christmas Time

December 16, 2021 //  by Jenny Phillips

It is that time of year to decorate the halls.

Before you start decorating and putting up your Christmas decorations and lights here are some important safety checks you should do to protect yourself and your home.

First Step, take the time to time to check for any worn plugs/connections, missing/damaged light globes, and frayed/damaged cords on your Christmas lights as this can cause electrical faults that can start a fire.  Don’t risk it and purchase a new set, ensuring they are Australian compliant.  This also goes for any extension leads or power boards.

Some important tips;

  • Don’t alter or modify lights
  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions on setting up and operating
  • Test your safety switch and your smoke detectors to ensure they are working
  • Ensure all lights, extension leads and power boards are suitable for the intended use (check if the lights are for indoors or outdoors)
  • Use power boards fitted with over-load protection and avoid using double adaptors or piggy back plugs
  • Keep lights out of reach of children
  • When decorating your Christmas tree be mindful to evenly distribute decorations to avoid the tree falling over
  • Ensure decorations and/or Christmas trees are not placed near a heat source ie candles
  • Ensure your exit routes are not obstructed

And after:

  • Always turn off your Christmas lights before going to bed or leaving your home

For more electrical safety information please go to Electrical Safety Office Queensland.
