Green Waste Disposal Program begins in Brisbane

Brisbane City Council has begun a new green waste disposal program called the Green Waste Recycling Sevice, which is an easy and affordable way to have your garden waste collected.

The new light-green topped bin is the same size as the yellow topped recycling bin and will be picked up on alternate weeks to the yellow recycling bin. The green waste bin is optional to residents and up to two bins can be requested, for $16.65 on a quarterly rate ($65 p.a.), with a $30 establishment fee, both of these fees being charged to rates bills.

Green waste disposal is a goal which has local councils looking towards the future in terms of providing residents with ecologically sustainable ways of disposing of waste.

Using green waste bins will mean a reduction in landfill, meaning Brisbane’s carbon footprint is lowered  and production in future green waste disposal can be re-used as compost, which will become an important organic resource and returned to the environment.

The service begins in Brisbane from July 1st and will take a couple of months to be rolled out across the whole metro area due to the large number of people expected to take up the service.

Brisbane City Council advises that unit or townhouse owners will need to discuss the option of purchasing these bins with the Body Corporate, who can apply for the service.

We recommend that you also consider the availability of onsite storage space for the bins and space on the kerbside before lodging an application.

The Council advises that it may take a couple of months for envirowaste green topped bins to be delivered.
